A Quick Guide to Train Etiquette

Holding an associate degree in law enforcement from Morton College, Hector Mariscal works at Metra, a commuter railroad in Chicago. Over two decades serving as a train conductor, Hector Mariscal has ensured the safety of riders by helping to maintain discipline among the passengers.

With or without the help of a conductor, commuters should learn how to observe proper train etiquette. Below are a few basic points to make everyone's ride more pleasant.

Make an effort not to disrupt others by talking loudly inside the train. Also, avoid listening to loud music, even through headphones. Etiquette coaches recommend gauging the noise level of the surroundings before engaging in a conversation with a fellow passenger.

Passengers should also minimize personal grooming while inside the train. Applying nail polish, for example, may disturb fellow commuters with the smell of chemicals. Other behaviors that are frowned upon include applying makeup and similar things best done in the privacy of one's home.

Etiquette experts recommend showing the utmost respect for fellow riders when on a train. In keeping with this ideal, passengers who notice someone behaving improperly should also exhibit politeness when addressing the situation or bringing it to a conductor's attention.

Trains VR Game Released for Samsung Gear VR

An alumnus of McCarrell Christian Academy, Hector Mariscal also studied law enforcement at Morton College, then chose to work for Chicago's Metra upon graduating. After starting out as a foreman assistant, Hector Mariscal now works for the company in the capacity of lead conductor of trains and serves as vice president of union local 653.

As of May 1, owners of the Samsung Gear VR can re-live the experience of building model railways and enjoy a ride around the tracks through the Trains VR game. Developed by The House of Fables, Trains VR allows users to experiment with different railroad designs in an ultra-realistic setting complete with built-in surrounding accessories like park benches, fences, and shrubs.

The goal of the casual puzzle game is to build the most effective railway layout through solving puzzles. Once the track is complete, players can experience a first-hand view of what it's like to drive in the train and, while doing so, can pick up up cargo and use tunnels, turntables, and switches to solve potential logistical issues.
